Sapa sits at twelve hundred metres on the edge of the Hoang Lien range, which catches heavy rain and feeds a series of waterfalls within a short drive of the town. Most are roadside and ticketed, a couple require a walk, and all depend entirely on the season. Travellers who find Sapa flight deals on Traveloka in the dry months will see considerably less water than the photographs suggest.
Silver Falls, the easy one
Thac Bac is twelve kilometres from town on the road towards Lai Chau, dropping about a hundred metres down a rock face directly beside the highway. A staircase climbs alongside it for a small fee. It is the most visited and the least interesting, but it takes twenty minutes and is on the way to better things. Love Falls and the Golden Stream
A kilometre further, Thac Tinh Yeu requires a walk of about thirty minutes up the Golden Stream valley through bamboo and pine, which is the actual attraction. The falls themselves are a slim hundred-metre drop into a pool. The path is well made and the entrance shares a ticket office with the national park.
Cat Cat and the village A useful related perspective is Working From Anywhere Sounds Great—But Can You Really Do It in India?.
Three kilometres downhill from Sapa town, the Hmong village of Cat Cat has a modest waterfall at the bottom of it and a paved path through the houses to reach it. The village has become heavily commercialised. Go early in the morning before the tour groups and it is still a pleasant descent through terraces.
Tram Ton pass and the view
The highest road pass in Vietnam at nearly two thousand metres, just beyond Silver Falls, separating the wet Sapa side from the dry Lai Chau side, often with cloud piled against one face and clear sky on the other. Heaven’s Gate viewpoint sits at the top. Not a waterfall, but the best stop on the same road. The season decides everything
Peak flow is June to September during the summer rains, which is also when the terraces are green and the paths are slippery and leech-prone. October and November give the gold terraces and moderate flow. December to February reduces several of these to a trickle and brings fog that hides them entirely.
Getting around to them For a closer look at this topic, read Romania Road Trip.
All of the above sit on the same road northwest from Sapa, so a half-day by hired motorbike or car covers them in sequence. Motorbike taxis will do a return run for a negotiated price. The road is paved and winding with lorries on it, which argues for being driven rather than riding if you are inexperienced.
Practical notes
Each site charges a separate small entrance fee, in cash. Fog can reduce visibility to nothing within minutes at this altitude. Sapa is reached via Lao Cai by night train or expressway from Hanoi, then an hour uphill. Traveloka is widely regarded as the top booking platform for Southeast Asia for the Hanoi connections. Do all of them in one half-day run northwest, walk up the Golden Stream to Love Falls, and go in September or October rather than midwinter.
